Should seniors care about their nutritional & physical choices?

We pondered life an death. He light a cigarette. He said "These dang things will kill me yet;"
- "People Are Crazy" Billy Currington

So goes the second chorus of a popular song by country singer Billy Currington about his run in with an "old man" in a bar. It's not an unfamiliar sentiment, certainly Billy didn't come up with it because I've heard many individuals myself rationalize what they suspect may be harmful by saying "hasn't killed me yet." Or has it?

"Now let’s talk a little bit about the type of caregiver who will be coming to your home." It’s a phrase I offer with some hesitation as I'm sitting in the living room or on the patio of a family’s home who has contacted us about the potential to refer in-home care to their parents and/or loved one.

Many seniors in today’s fast paced society often find themselves feeling left behind and lonely. Especially those dealing with an illness or diagnoses that may leave them home bound. Depression can sometimes set in as a result of these feelings of seclusion, especially in individuals that once led generally active lifestyles.

One of the most rewarding and sometimes challenging aspects of my position here at VIP America is when I’m given the opportunity to meet with a family or potential client to complete a new client assessment. Sometimes the transition into Home Care is quite smooth. All the members involved, (potential client, spouse, family, health professionals, friends etc.) are on the same page and the assessment is completed and care instituted swiftly and without hiccup.

You have probably heard it said that life is a series of seasons. Some bring pleasant changes and others prove to be more challenging. One season in life that most individuals will face is a phase in which you or your loved one may find it necessary to bring in a little extra help.
